Celebrating Our History, Shaping Our Future

In 2017, Sisters in Crime (SinC) celebrated a major milestone: 30 years of advocacy, community, and crime writing. The Raising Women’s Voices report chronicles how a small group of determined women changed the publishing industry forever.

Minneapolis: Where It All Began

From Frustration to Action

While Sisters in Crime was founded in New York, our local roots run deep. The very first membership meeting in the organization’s history wasn’t held in a boardroom in Manhattan—it was held right here in Minneapolis at the 1987 Bouchercon. This historic gathering established the steering committee that would guide SinC into the future.

In 1986, Sara Paretsky and fellow writers noticed a stark reality: women wrote 30% of published crime novels, but books by men received seven times as many reviews.
They decided to organize rather than agonize. What started as a steering committee has grown into an international organization with over 3,800 members and 50+ chapters.

Original Mission: To combat discrimination and imbalance in book reviews.

Today’s Vision: To serve as the voice for excellence and diversity in crime writing
